Welcome to Ms. Miriam’s Atelier!

Classes are taught in the backyard studio cottage of Ms. Miriam: a Greenpoint native, local Mom, and professional artist and art teacher with over 10 years of experience.

Classes are limited to 5 students per day (6 if a child joins for a make up class) in order to ensure each student is given ample instruction in a group setting. Children also learn from one another as we discuss art history, various methods of approaching scale, composition, color theory, and explore traditional methods of materials in acrylic and oil paint (oil paint is reserved for students 16+ who have studied acrylic and are ready for more advanced instruction). It is recommended younger artists begin with pencil and pastels, in order to learn the fundamentals of drawing and color theory before graduating to acrylic. Acrylic is recommended for students ages 10 and up.

Depending on their experience level I will suggest a medium to start with and we will discuss personal goals and objectives for the year.

Where are the classes?

  • Classes take place in a private art studio in a backyard cottage on Eckford Street, between Meserole St. and Calyer St.. Address will be given to registered students. To enter the studio please walk through the side gate and proceed towards the cottage.

F.A.Q.s

What materials are needed?

  • Your child may need pencils, watercolors, pastels, or acrylic paints, along with an 18 x 24” drawing pad, based on their interests and skills. A list of materials will be given when you register. The total cost for materials for the year is about $50 - $100, depending on your child's needs.

Are there make-up classes?

  • Yes, each child is given 2 make-up classes for the semester. Please reach out via e-mail to schedule on an alternative week day or Saturday morning (pending availability). Only 1 additional child is allowed to join a weekday class for a make-up per day. Make-ups do not roll over into the next semester.

  • Ms. Miriam’s Atelier follows the NYC Public School calendar and is closed on major holidays.

How is payment processed?

  • You must pay for the whole semester when you sign up. For example, if you join a 60-minute class every Tuesday, you'll owe $800 for September to December. In December, current students get first choice for Spring registration. You can keep your day or switch to another if there’s space.

  • The monthly totals are $200 for 60 minute registration, and $300 for 90 minute registration. If your child's class falls on a school holiday and there is no school in session it does not effect the monthly required total.

  • If you are unable to pay the monthly total due to financial difficulties please reach out to Ms. Miriam’s studio via e-mail and we will work with you on a sliding scale.

  • Payments are accepted via Venmo or Zelle. Instructions will be given at registration.

What is the pick-up/drop-off protocol?

  • Very easy! Simply walk through the side gate and enter the cottage for drop off and pick up. We are a walking distance from all local public schools. If your child is over 10 and is able to walk independently please let me know, otherwise a parent or guardian is required to enter the studio to drop off and pick up their child.

  • The studio is open from 2:30 PM and closes at 5 PM from Monday through Friday. For example, if you register for a 60 minute class on Tuesdays and drop off at 3 pm, please arrive at 4pm for pick up.

The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity.”
